Welcome to the Department of Sociology

Sociology is a key social science that assists us in understanding our ever-changing, complex social world. Sociologists use their theoretical skills to investigate a wide range of human behaviour and constructions: social institutions, social class, gender, inequality, environmental issues, families, service delivery protests, and migration, to mention a few. The field also offers a range of research techniques that can be applied to virtually any aspect of social life.

We offer sociology on an undergraduate and postgraduate level. Using our expertise in various areas, we endeavour to prepare our graduates to become active, critically informed agents of change. Students who are well-trained in sociology think critically about how the social world works and how it can be changed for the better - preparing them to become the next generation of leaders, policymakers, and scholars.

Prof Katinka de Wet - why "attention" matters!

Invited as a guest speaker at a private higher education provider, Prof Katinka de Wet used the opportunity to share her wisdom on "attention" with the 2026 graduates.  Prof de Wet spoke about the challenges posed by the current “attention economy”, quoting French philosopher Simone Weil, who stated: “Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity”. Her argument set out to explain how our attention is a resource that can be depleted just like any other resource, and that it is therefore an important asset to nurture and to protect. Her message was that paying attention happens at various levels, which include: individual care, care to relationships, care to our studies, our work, and also care to our environment.
